Seryth

Post by Valkyrie »

Origins

The Seryth are a race of serpent-like people, often misunderstood and burdened with a poor reputation due to the actions of a select few. As a result, they are frequent victims of discrimination, feared by those who do not take the time to understand them.

They are descended from an ancient lineage of dragons, specifically wyrms, whose forms gradually changed over countless generations. Rather than retaining the imposing features of their ancestors, their bodies adapted into something more subtle and refined, bearing closer resemblance to serpents than dragons.

Despite this, traces of their draconic heritage still remain. On rare occasions, a Seryth may be born with horns or other unusual traits, seen by many as a sign of strong ancestral blood. Such individuals are often viewed with a mix of reverence and unease, even among their own kind.

Traits

Seryth possess a number of distinct physical characteristics that set them apart from other races. They have small, pointed ears (less pronounced than those of elves, but noticeable enough to stand out.) Their bodies are marked by clusters of scales, most commonly found along the neck, shoulders, face, and spine, though these can appear anywhere and vary greatly in size, pattern, and color from person to person.

Extending from the base of the spine is a serpent-like tail, covered in scales. Its length and thickness differ depending on genetics, with some being long and slender while others are shorter and more robust.

They are typically slightly taller than humans, with lean builds that can give them a somewhat frail or lanky appearance. Their slit pupils and naturally lower body temperature further add to their unsettling presence in the eyes of outsiders. In rare cases, individuals may also possess horns, a trait tied to their distant draconic origins.

Mentally, Seryth are known for their sharp intellect and constant awareness of their surroundings. They have a tendency to observe, analyze, and anticipate, often thinking several steps ahead in any situation. While this has led to stereotypes portraying them as deceptive or manipulative, this perception is largely unfounded. In truth, their behavior stems from caution and habit rather than malice.

Seryth mature at a similar rate to humans, typically reaching adulthood around the age of 25. Up until this point, their aging process is nearly identical.

After reaching maturity, however, their aging slows dramatically. A Seryth may appear physically unchanged for centuries, maintaining their youthful form well into their later years. Their average lifespan is around 450 years.

At approximately 400 years of age, this process reverses. Aging accelerates rapidly, and the final decades of a Seryth’s life pass much more quickly.

Magic

A Seryth’s skill with magic varies greatly from individual to individual. While some display exceptional talent and go on to become highly skilled practitioners, most fall within an average range of ability. Others, however, may struggle significantly or even prove entirely incapable of properly wielding magic at all.
